Sclerotherapy Thread Vein Treatment in Southend-on-Sea, Essex at JR Medical
As many as 50% of British women may be affected by varicose veins and spider veins. Fortunately, a variety of treatments are available to eliminate their appearance.
Spider veins (also known as thread veins), which spread like a spider's web, are flat, red, blue or purple veins on the skin's surface. Those spider veins, which are small and located on the face or areas with thinner skin, could easily be treated by IPL or laser.
Varicose veins are larger, distended or raised. When one-way valves in the veins fail, blood no longer flows efficiently, causing veins to become enlarged and congested with blood. Heredity, hormones and daily routines play a role in determining whether or not the valves will fail, leading to abnormal veins.
While both types are cosmetically unappealing, varicose veins can be painful as well. Cramping, burning, itching and swelling are all common symptoms associated with varicose veins. In rare cases, they can bleed.
For severe cases, doctors can remove veins surgically or by using a catheter to deliver radio-frequency energy to collapse the vein. Both methods require anaesthetics and a long recovery.
What causes vein problems?
The five key factors that contribute to such circulatory problems at mid-life and beyond are as follows:
- Poor nutrition
- Excessive weight (> 20% above normal body weight)
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Chronic constipation and straining with bowel movements
- Prolonged standing (and even sitting)
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a proven non-surgical medical procedure that has been successfully used to eliminate very small varicose veins and thread veins (also known as spider veins) for over a century. The procedure itself is quick, non-invasive and simple - which means little or no downtime!
Sclerotherapy thread vein treatment involves an injection of a solution called a sclerosant. The solution is injected into the spider vein which then effectively shrinks the blood vessels causing them to dissolve over a period of a few weeks.
What does sclerotherapy thread vein removal involve?
Sclerotherapy thread vein treatment does not typically require any anaesthesia. The patient will lie on their back or front (depending on the location of thread veins) and the doctor will clean the area of the legs that are to be treated, then insert a small needle and inject the solution into the problem veins. The patient will usually feel nothing, but in some cases may feel a sense of burning or tingling.
When the procedure is complete, the area should be wrapped with a pressure bandage or compression stocking should be worn to prevent the tiny vessels reopen. We sometimes suggest to our patients to wear tight leggings as they help as well. Post-treatment patients shouldn’t take a bath or go to a sauna for a good two weeks. Showers with body temperature water are advisable from the next day. We also suggest keeping your legs up as much and as when you can.
Does thread vein treatment have any side effects?
After undergoing sclerotherapy thread vein treatment in JR Medical Essex, the patient could remain active as there is no downtime to treatment. Recovery is typically easy, however, some patients may experience some bruising or tenderness or itching and you should avoid direct sunlight as this can cause dark spots to appear in the treated area.
Bear in mind, sclerotherapy is only designed for the lower extremities and not the face.
