How Cryotherapy for Skin Lesions Works
Cryotherapy primarily utilizes liquid nitrogen, which is capable of reaching extremely low temperatures of -196°C (-321°F). During the treatment, liquid nitrogen is carefully applied directly to the lesion, causing rapid freezing of the skin tissue. This extreme cold creates a thermal shock that disrupts the cellular structure of the lesion. Consequently, the targeted cells are destroyed, leading to the formation of a blister underneath the lesion.
In the following days, the blister may develop into a protective scab. Gradually, as the area heals, the scab will fall off, taking the lesion with it and revealing healthy, new skin underneath. The healing process typically takes around 1-2 weeks for the scab to detach, while full skin recovery occurs within 3-6 weeks. However, the exact timeline depends on the size, depth, and location of the lesion.
Cryotherapy is a precise and highly effective method that minimizes impact on surrounding healthy tissue. Furthermore, at JR Medical, we offer a variety of advanced treatments for removing skin lesions, ensuring we can provide the most suitable option for your needs.

How to Prepare for Your Cryotherapy Treatment
Before your cryotherapy session, it is important to prepare the treatment area to ensure optimal results. Patients should:
- Ensure the area is clean and dry.
- Remove any makeup, lotions, or topical treatments from the skin.
- Inform the dermatologist if you are taking any medications or have underlying health conditions that may affect healing.
During your consultation, our Consultant Dermatologist will thoroughly provide detailed pre-treatment and post-treatment instructions to ensure a smooth recovery. Following the procedure, it is important to keep the treated area clean and well-protected. Additionally, if necessary, a sterile dressing may be applied. Moreover, aftercare instructions will be shared, including the recommended use of mild pain relief and topical ointments to support the healing process.
Post-Treatment Care and Healing
Following cryotherapy, it is normal for the treated area to become red and swollen. A blister or scab will form as part of the body’s natural healing process. It is important to avoid picking at the scab, as this may delay healing and increase the risk of scarring. The area will generally heal within 3 to 6 weeks, leaving behind fresh, healthy skin.
While cryotherapy is considered a low-risk procedure, some patients may experience mild side effects such as temporary skin discoloration (hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation) or minor scarring. These side effects are usually temporary and will resolve with time.
