What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are substances injected into lips or the skin to plump it up or in order to make the skin firmer and smooth out soft lines and wrinkles or even by strategically placing them in locations to create a lifting effect in the face or on the hands.

Our recommended fillers are Teosyal, a range of injectable dermal fillers made of hyaluronic acid designed to treat wrinkles, give volume to the face and also improve skin quality, Juvederm® Ultra, Stylage, Sinclair and MaiLi range of innovative monophasic cross-linked injectable dermal fillers that contain hyaluronic acid and antioxidants.

    How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers work by smoothing and plumping facial lines, wrinkles and folds.

As we age our skin loses its natural substance of Hyaluronic Acid. This causes the skin to lose its plumpness, and elasticity and to develop lines and wrinkles.

The dermal filler will remain in the skin where it binds to water to produce a lift and give firmness to the treated area.

At JR Medical we have 2 methods of administering the dermal fillers. These are:-

    • Needle – injected directly into the lines and wrinkles
    • Cannula – A needle makes an entry point for the cannula to be inserted which can then travel underneath to strategic points to give a lifting effect.

In your consultation, the Doctor will assess and advise which method would best suit you and achieve the best results for you.

Are there any side effects from dermal fillers?

You can experience the slight reactions listed below after treatment. However, these will soon subside as the filler settles into your skin. These can vary from one person to another.

    • bruising
    • tenderness
    • swelling
    • redness
    • itching

    Is dermal filler treatment painful?

The needle used is very fine, however, with all injections, there may be some slight discomfort during/after the injection.

We do apply a numbing cream prior to treatment to minimise any discomfort and also the majority Dermal Fillers now contain local anaesthetic inside the syringe and therefore just by applying topical anaesthetic on the surface of the skin takes away the edge of the pain with an initial injection.

How long will the treatment take?

We ask that you arrive at your dermal fillers in Essex appointment with no makeup on. The area is thoroughly cleaned and a numbing cream is applied for 30-60 mins prior to the treatment. The time for the treatment then depends on the size of the area to be treated. This is approximately 10-30 minutes.

Can I wear make-up after the treatment?

If the Doctor has used the needle method you can apply makeup 2 hours post-treatment. For Cannula method, we recommend waiting 24 hours before applying makeup.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Typically, the results of dermal fillers can last six to nine months or even a year, however, this varies from one person to another. The filler is gradually broken down and absorbed by the body over time, so the lines, wrinkles or lips will ultimately return to their previous appearance without top-up treatments. It is recommended to have touch up or repeat injections to help optimise the results to last longer.

    What aftercare will I receive?

After the treatment, we normally book you in for a checkup/massage of the area for the following day. The Doctor will recommend any painkillers if necessary or give you a topical cream to take home. We then see you 2 weeks after the treatment for a final check on everything and will recommend a review after 6 months.
